Are False Lashes Haram?

For many makeup lovers, false lashes are a must have as part of their makeup routine. False lashes not only add more volume to your lashes, but given the diverse styles and cuts, they can create a number of different looks from bold and daring to soft and subtle.

However, for many Muslim women, false lashes have become a bit of a controversial topic due to various Islamic rulings on the nature and use of false lashes, or more specifically hair that is attached to the body. Most of the Islamic scholars and schools of thought have agreed that false hair in the form of wigs are not allowed due to the following hadith (taken from SeekersGuidance.org):

Sayyida A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) narrates that an Ansari girl was married and became sick hence all her hair fell out. They (her family and friends) intended to join her hair with false hair, so they asked the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) who said: “Allah has cursed the woman who joins her or someone else’s hair (with the hair of another man or woman) and the woman who asks for her hair to be joined with the hair of another.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, no 5590)

Although the hadith is specific to hair in the form of a wig, scholars have also forwarded the narration to include false eyelashes, eyebrows, or any other form of hair on the body that alludes to a false representation of a persons looks or beauty. A handful of scholars argue that if the hair is synthetic (or animal based - other than pig hair), then it is still permissible. However, most scholars still insist that regardless of the type of materials used to create the false hair, it is still impermissible.

Are there exceptions to the ruling?

As in most cases of Islamic rulings, there are always certain circumstances that allow for some permissibility, and various scholars have discussed such rulings. The most common example mentioned is if a woman who was undergoing chemotherapy and lost her hair, and the psychological affects of this event were so detrimental that it caused her severe depression, then in such cases a wig would be permissible because its function is not solely cosmetic, but used for mental health and well being.

However, getting back specifically to the case of false lashes and lash extensions, most of these products are specifically designed for cosmetic purposes and beautification only. The good news however is that even if a woman chooses not to wear false lashes for religious purposes, there are ways to thicken and extend your lashes naturally.
