Nail Polish Keeps Chipping? 14 Ways to Protect Your Nails

Nail Polish Keeps Chipping?

You just finished painting your nails with your favorite shade of pink, and an hour later you notice a chip.

My nail polish keeps chipping AAARRGGHHH!!

Yes, the frustration is real, but there are ways to prevent the aggravation.

Here are 14 tips to keeping your nail polish from chipping:

1. Shake Shake Shake!

Tuesday in Love Halal Water Permeable Nail Polish contains a unique chemical complex that allows water to permeate through. However, in order to make sure that you get a smooth even finish every time, it’s important to shake the bottle well before applying.

2. Clear Away Oils

Before you begin the application process, make sure that your nails are free of any excess oils or creams (such as hand lotion). Manicures can break down when applied to an oily nail bed. Our hands and fingers have natural oils that can migrate onto our nail beds, and when you apply polish right over that, it won’t adhere correctly. Use a cotton swab to wipe down your nails with white vinegar before applying the polish. This removes any product buildup or natural oils on your nail beds that could create a barrier between the polish.

3. Don't Soak Your Nails

Avoid soaking your nails before painting them. Manicurists do this to soften cuticles, but it can actually cause nails to retain water and expand. Once they're painted they'll shrink, meaning your polish will no longer fit your nails. So ask your manicurist to use cuticle oil instead.

4. The Fine Art of Filing

File your nails into a shape that look like your cuticle's, which makes them less likely to break. You can also try buffing your nails before applying the polish to create a rougher surface. This allows the polish to hold on to a larger surface area for longer wear.

When nails are over-filed and/or overly shaped, it weakens the sidewalls of the nails. The weaker the nail, the less able it is to hold on to the lacquer, which can lead to cracking. When filing your nails (or getting them filed), make sure you’re only filing in one direction instead of a back-and-forth sawing motion. The latter agitates the free edge of your nail and makes it weaker and more prone to splitting. Filing in one direction feels better, looks better, and is better for your nail health as it won’t leave behind any jagged edges.

5. Careful on the Cuticles!

Avoid getting any polish on your cuticles. This can lift the polish from the nail and lead to chipping. It’s important that you don’t cut your cuticles, but rather push them back using cuticle oil and a pusher tool to prevent polish from getting on them.

6. Follow the Natural Shape

Your natural nail has a shape, and if your polish doesn’t follow this natural shape evenly throughout the placement of polish, cracking will happen on the side or in the middle of the nail. If too much polish is applied on the sides, base or tip of your nail, it will lead to lifting and splitting. You should apply your polish starting in the middle and thinning out toward the sides.

7. The Right Amount of Nail Polish

If you apply the nail polish too thickly, it basically suffocates itself and can’t dry down properly. This can lead to bubbles and/or your nail polish staying tacky, which basically means a smeared, dented manicure.

8. Don't Forget the Free Edge!

Be sure to paint the "free edge" of your nails. Using long smooth strokes, apply the nail polish and topcoat around the front edge of your nail to ensure your entire nail is sealed.

9. Use the Hairdryer

Use a hairdryer to dry your nails as this will create a stronger bond. But be sure to keep the dryer settings on COOL or FAN. Hot air can actually keep the polish from drying and affect the chemicals in the polish.

10. Washing with the Right Soap

When washing your hands, avoid using hand sanitizer. Sanitizer can dry out your nails and ruin the topcoat. Instead, wash your hands with a mild soap.

11. Glove Protection

Wear gloves when doing the dishes to protect your manicure. The fastest way to ruin a manicure is to submerge your nails in hot water and harsh cleaning chemicals. Wearing gloves will help keep that fresh manicure look.

12. Our Water Permeable Basecoat

Our New Water Permeable Basecoat provides long lasting wear and prevents staining on nails. Applying a layer of topcoat creates a beautiful seal and nice glossy finish for any manicure. Our Tuesday in Love Topcoat is completely water permeable and therefore can be used on top of your favorite color.

14. How to Repair a Chip

If you chip or smudge a nail, use a cotton swap dipped in polish remover to smooth over the ridge. If you just paint over it without smoothing it out, you'll get a bump on your nail.

    Hi Dawn,
This is our new formula that actually requires nail polish remover to take off :) The great thing about the new formula is that it still maintains full water permeability. And unlike other breathable polishes, there’s no rubbing required to make the water go through.

    Asalamu alaycum,
I’ve bought your nail polish years ago and it was clumpy and peeled off so easily. In fact, it peeled off in one price if I simply touched it with anything. So frustrating!
However, I just read that you have a peel free formula now. Have you changed your product or is it the same as you sold 3 years ago?
Thank you, I would love to start wearing nail polish again!
