Why You Need a Vision Board
Have you ever made a vision board? Making a collage of your goals either digitally or where you can hang it and see it every day can actually help move you closer to your goals – and that’s even according to science!
You’ve no doubt heard the phrases “law of attraction,” “manifestation,” “visualization,” and other pop psychology buzzwords flying around lately. You may have even heard some celebrities like Oprah and Jim Carrey reference their “vision boards.” Maybe you even have a few friends who are into vision boarding. Here’s why – and how – to make your own vision board.
Keep it halal
Before we begin, let’s address an elephant in the room – no, having a vision board is not haram. It is not some kind of witchcraft or magic. It is simply putting psychology to work for you; seeing the images on a regular basis primes your brain to be focused on your goals, which will allow you to recognize opportunities and act in alignment with your goals. As Muslims, we still recognize that there is no power or might except Allah, and we recognize that it is our Creator who makes all things possible. You can also think of a vision board as a visual representation of your duas.
What’s a vision board?
A vision board is basically a collection of pictures, poems, quotes, and words that inspire you. Some people call them “mood boards” or “inspiration boards.” You can easily collect images online, cut them out of magazines, or draw/write them yourself, and post them on a poster board, bulletin board, or even in a notebook. Think of it as scrapbooking your dreams, goals, and desires.
Thanks to technology, you can even make a digital vision board with websites like Canva, Pinterest, and Tumblr, although most people prefer a physical one so they can hang it where they’ll see it daily. If you do opt to make a digital one, use it as a lock screen on your phone/iPad, so you can see it frequently.
Your board may be specific to one area of your life, like finances or health, or you may choose to make separate boards for each area of your life. Or you can go all out and have an all-inclusive board that expresses your desires for your love life, family, career, finances, health, travel, and anything else you want. You don’t have to categorize your images by area, but you can if you want. It’s your board…have lots of fun with it!
How does it work?
Using visualization is a powerful psychological tool used by top performers across industries to help them achieve their goals. Athletes, actors, top business people, and more use visualization. Studies have shown that visualization can be almost as effective as physical practice!
Images are the language of the unconscious mind. We dream in images, and we’re bombarded with images daily. This is actually how advertising works. When you have a vision board somewhere you’ll see it every day, whether it’s hanging next to your bed, over your desk in your office, or you’re using a digital one as a lock screen on your phone, you’ll keep your intentions and goals front and center. That will help you stay in alignment and take inspired and aligned action towards your goals.
